LoopX AI is a Waterloo based startup founded by a group of roboticists from University of Waterloo in 2022. At LoopX, we develop and provide cutting-edge vehicle-agnostic autonomy solutions that can be deployed on any types of vehicles to improve safety and efficiency of mobility. Our autonomy solution has been deployed and verified on a variety of vehicles. We are on a mission to better the world through autonomy.

Canada’s First All-weather Autonomous Delivery Robot – GoosEx™

GoosEx is Canada’s first autonomous delivery robot empowered by the autonomy solution developed by LoopX AI. It has been deployed on the campus of University of Waterloo to provide food delivery services.

Canada’s First All-weather 5G Autonomous Shuttle Bus – WatonoBus

WatonoBus is Canada’s first all-weather autonomous shuttle bus developed by Mechatronics Vehicle System Lab at University of Waterloo and most of team members at LoopX AI are involved in this program. It has been deployed on the campus of University of Waterloo to provide transportation services.

Canada’s First Autonomous Underground Mining Vehicle

LoopX AI is working with industrial partners to develop Canada’s first autonomous underground mining vehicle empowered by its proven vehicle-agnostic autonomy solution. It will be tested and demonstrated at NORCAT underground mine in Sudbury, ON.

Our Milestones

2022.01

LoopX was incorporated in Canada by a group of PhD students from University of Waterloo to commercialize the autonomous driving technology in the last-mile delivery market; LoopX won the Engineering of Future Fund awarded by University of Waterloo to build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

2022.06

LoopX took top prize in the 5G Transportation Challenge sponsored by Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) and built partnerships with Rogers, Ericsson, Hexagon and AWS to develop an innovative 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) based autonomous driving system.

2022.8

LoopX developed Canada’s first all-weather autonomous delivery robot that has been deployed on the campus of University of Waterloo for food delivery by partnering with HungryPanda, the largest Asian food delivery platform in the world.

LoopX was selected as one of the 100 high-impact Canadian startups to participate in the Accelerator Centre: Studio program which provides seed funding, workspace, professional mentorship and training, as well as access to AC’s unparalleled entrepreneurship ecosystem.

LoopX successfully demonstrated the developed 5G MEC based autonomy and teleoperation solution for Rogers and other partners in David Johnson R+T Park; LoopX successfully showcased the developed 3D autonomous parking solution for Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI) in David Johnson R+T Park.

2023.01

LoopX was committed to explore the mining industry with its proven autonomous technology; LoopX was selected into Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) to accelerate the development and commercialization of its innovative autonomy in mining.

Meet The Team

Chao Yu

Chao Yu is the founder and CEO at LoopX AI. He has over 10 years of team management experience in autonomous driving and vehicle electrification at General Motors. He is a candidate of engineering Ph.D. and Master of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (MBET) at University of Waterloo.

Ling Loerchner

Ling Loerchner serves as the senior business advisor at LoopX AI. She is Vice President at RBCx Investment Bank. She used to be the Chief Commercialization Officer at the University of Waterloo and has over 20 years of experience on helping startups grow and succeed. She holds an MBA from Laurier University and a bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University.

Lucas Cui

Lucas Cui is the cofounder and Chief Innovation Officer at LoopX AI. He has over 5 years of experience working on multiple autonomous driving projects, including WatonoBus, Canada’s first all-weather autonomous shuttle bus. He is a Ph.D. candidate at University of Waterloo with his research focusing on perception fusion using deep learning.

Hamlin Zheng

Hamlin Zheng leads the mapping and localization team at LoopX AI. He has over 5 years of experience working on system design and software development for mobile robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles. His innovative work on indoor/outdoor localization and dynamic HD map updating has turned into multiple U.S. patent pending for LoopX AI.

Bruce Huang

Bruce Huang is the cofounder and CTO at LoopX AI. He has over 5 years of experience working on a Toronto-based autonomous truck company leading the software development of autonomous driving system (ADS) and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). He holds a master’s degree on automated vehicle control from University of Waterloo and a bachelor’s degree in robotics from Pennsylvania State University.

Jimmy Zhong

Jimmy Zhong leads the path planning and vehicle control team at LoopX AI. He has over 6 years of working experience on vehicle dynamics and electrification at NIO (Chinese leading EV maker) and SAIC Motors. He is a Ph.D. candidate at University of Waterloo with his research focusing on machine learning – based path planning and control for autonomous vehicles.

James Zhang

James Zhang is the cofounder and COO at LoopX AI. He has rich experience on the deployment and the operation of autonomous vehicles, including Canada’s first autonomous research vehicle Autonomoose and Canada’s first autonomous last-mile delivery vehicle GoosEx. He holds a master’s degree on automated vehicle decision making and planning from University of Waterloo and a bachelor’s degree in robotics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
